Our first newsletter of 2026 covers how we are focusing on purpose this year, our What Lies Ahead report launch, our upcoming Purpose Q&A style event in March, and a call to sign up for the MD Communications Legal 5K.
Looking ahead to a year of purpose
We’re continuing our culture campaign with our next Question Time–style event, bringing together purpose-led leaders from inside and outside the legal sector to debate a timely question: does purpose still exist in law firms? It’s a private event with a hand-selected, interactive audience, so if you’d like to be considered, please drop me a line.
If something more active appeals, it’s also time to sign up for our Legal 5K. Taking place on Thursday 23 April, the race brings the sector together while raising much-needed funds for independent special-needs charity Skylarks. To get race-ready, we’re launching a Central London run club on Tuesdays from March. Get in touch with Nick to register.
Last month also saw the launch of our new white paper on threats and opportunities for the global legal sector, following months of in-depth interviews. Culture emerged as a critical make-or-break factor, alongside the risks and opportunities posed by AI. Notably, 59% of respondents said technology has reduced the need for trainees or junior lawyers, yet only 5% trust current AI quality controls.
Finally, many of us lack confidence when it comes to public speaking, so I was delighted to contribute a chapter to Breaking Ground by Deborah Brightman Farone. The chapter focuses on how female rainmakers can step up, use the podium with confidence and approach BD more effectively. Deborah has kindly allowed me to share my chapter with anyone across the sector who would find it helpful, so just drop me a line.
For those who want more structured support, we’ve recently introduced a new Magic Sauce BD course, focused on practical, relationship-led business development. Do get in touch if it would be helpful.
And if LinkedIn has been feeling frustrating this year, you’re not alone. We’ve shared some clear, practical tips to help make sense of the latest 360Brew update and what it means in practice.
Best wishes,
Melissa
What’s keeping legal leaders awake at night?
We recently launched our annual state-of-the-nation report, What Lies Ahead 2026: Navigating Threats and Seizing Opportunities, highlighting the growing challenges facing legal leaders, with AI governance and political instability at the forefront, whilst retaining a positive culture is still one of the hardest things that leaders have to grapple with. With thanks to Christine Braamskamp of Jenner & Block for the foreword, George Hannah of Lewis Silkin for the afterword, and all our contributors.
