Our latest newsletter covers how we supported the launch of a new initiative at Parliament to tackle the hidden crisis of parental separation in UK schools from our pro bono campaign, the Parents Promise; our new guide, Navigating Global Growth: A Playbook for Local Independent Law Firms, to be unveiled at the IBA Toronto conference next month; and our culture series of thought leadership breakfasts continues.

Purpose-powered PR

I set up MD Communications with the desire to create something different: to be purpose-led, impact oriented and to make a difference. Nothing says this better than the launch of the latest pro bono campaign from The Parents Promise, of which I am a founder with James Hayhurst.

The Separation and Schools initiative is a campaign to tackle the hidden crisis of parental separation in UK schools, which launched in Parliament last month. The Times featured the campaign in the legal pages and PR Week listed us in its campaigns round-up alongside Burger King, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Gordon Ramsey.

Using our voice and networks to push this issue into the national spotlight and drive real societal change to reduce the impact and mental toll on children during parental separation gives me and my team a lot of purpose. The subject of purpose in the legal sector is the theme of our upcoming roundtable breakfast at the Club at the Ivy next month. We’re excited that Matt Meyer, Managing Partner of Kingsley Napley who lectures on the subject at Cambridge University, will be joining us to lead the conversation.

International growth: new guide released soon

With the IBA Toronto annual conference fast approaching, we are excited to be knee deep in research for our latest thought leadership publication, Navigating Global Growth: A Playbook for Local Independent Law Firms, to be unveiled at the event.

We have undertaken detailed interviews with firms in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, USA, the Middle East, and Africa to explore how independent local law firms achieve sustainable, organic growth and build a consistent brand across borders, based on in-depth interviews with law firm leaders. The Law Society international team and many members of the International Bar Association have loaned their voices to the paper to recount their experience when building and maintaining the international side of their business, and of finding clients and referring firms who find they are ‘just right’.

If you’re heading to Toronto and would like to meet up to discuss the findings of the paper, or how we can support your international growth ambitions, please get in touch as we have a few slots remaining for coffee and catch up.

We are also hosting a business development event around the power of the personal brand to organically grow and maintain client relationships, with a new collab partner of ours and former CMO for Jenner & Block, Justin Portaz, so please drop me a line if you’d like to find out more about the event.

If it’s your first time attending the annual IBA conference and you’d like help making the most of your time there or would like an intro to someone, just drop me a line. I also run a women’s group attending the conferences if you’d like to join the WhatsApp chat.

Women’s retreat

Last month, I brought together 10 women from leadership roles in the legal sector for a retreat at Soho Farmhouse. A fantastic two days where we heard ten different sets of pressures and responsibilities, what keeps us awake at night, the resilience it takes to lead, the coping strategies we lean on, and the struggles we so rarely admit out loud. A massive thank you to the brilliant attendees, all female senior leaders, who gave so much of themselves during this exhilarating leadership learning exercise.

Ivy breakfasts

We continued our culture series of thought leadership breakfasts at the Club at the Ivy and recently hosted one on AI, which included Top 100 managing partners as well as the former minister for culture and tech, Damian Collins. We also hosted something different by bringing together BD leaders from the ad sector and the legal sector to share learnings on how we can encourage organic growth and why relationships are the key to success in business development (and a very enjoyable way to do it!).

If you or someone in your leadership team would like to be considered to take part in one of our Culture Breakfast series, please get in touch.
